Terrazzo consists of two parts, the binder
and the aggregate. The binder can be either resinous or cementitious
(cement or epoxy terrazzo). When contacting Miami Nice Floors,
a representative would first come to meet with the potential
client and formulate the scope of work. The standard rate
for terrazzo installation can be anywhere from $20-$30 per
square foot. This can go even higher depending on several
different factors. Cement is good for outdoor settings and
slabs that have had years to cure with little or no cracks.
Epoxy is good for strength and overall resilience. The floors
may be below grade, which would need moisture proofing, or
may need to be over a sound proofing barrier in a high-rise
condo. Some colors are difficult to achieve with cement, while
any color of the spectrum is possible with epoxy.
The second part that makes terrazzo is the aggregate, or
"chip." Aggregates can range from traditional types
such as marble and granite, to more exotic types such as glass
and mother of pearl. Generally, terrazzo is made from aggregate
that is of similar sizes that can by spread uniformly through
out the terrazzo mix. Some specialty aggregates can be either
placed or seeded during the installation process. Various
metal chips or turning can also be included in the mix design.
These aggregates range in price as a material, and also effect
overall price depending on the how difficult they are to grind
once the terrazzo mix has cured. Special types of diamond
abrasives may be needed to machine the floor is harder aggregates
are included such as granite or glass.
A terrazzo floor can be installed with or without the use
of metal divider strips. The decision whether or not to install
a metal divider strip can be made for aesthetic reasons or
necessary due to the condition of the slab. Traditionally,
brass and/or zinc are used as divider strips to give either
a "gold" or "silver" look, respectively.
Miami Nice Floors also uses stainless steel up to 1/8"
for use as divider strips to adapt to a marine environment.
Pricing/availability and workability of will determine which
or the many metals can be included in the terrazzo floor.
Traditionally, a terrazzo floor has been just that, a floor.
Miami Nice Floors can offer completely seamless transitions
from floors to walls to ceilings, effectively cacooning a
room in terrazzo. Vertical terrazzo starts at $100 per square
foot and is installed directly on site in cementitious applications.
Panels can also be installed depending on the condition and
location of the wall. Please call and ask for details on seamless
terrazzo for ceiling applications.
