Granite has a high absorbency rate just like any other natural stone. Like a hard and durable sponge, it’ has a very tough exterior but porous interior which allows water and other liquids seep into its structure. This is why granite commonly stains, specifically water stains, which can make your granite countertop look blemished and uninviting.

Water staining is no big problem, if you know the proper treatments. The best way to cure water stains is by using a powdered whiting-based poultice. Poultice works by absorbing the liquid the granite has absorbed. Powdered whiting is combined with hydrogen peroxide to create the poultice. Other solutions can be substituted with hydrogen peroxide, depending on the substance that caused the stain. Be wary though of chemicals which can harm your granite and cause etchings. Acids, if left sitting too long on the granite can cause etchings which can be unattractive and irreversible.
